Using Libraries Australia Records with TextWorks
[revised Dec 2005]

This page details the steps you take to save the records found in a search of the National Bibliographic Database on Libraries Australia (formerly Kinetica) and load them into an Inmagic® DB/TextWorks or CS/TextWorks database. It is assumed that you have a logon to Libraries Australia and copies of TextWorks and either MARC Transformer or Data Magician software (all software available from Maxus).

  1. Saving records from Libraries Australia
  • Log on to Libraries Australia with your username and password.
  • Conduct a search for the desired item.
  • Save the item to your local disk (either your hard drive or a network drive).
  1. Converting MARC records

Use the MARC Transformer software to convert MARC records to Inmagic format. Before converting your first batch of records, design a Map in MARC Transformer to specify which MARC tags are to be used and which TextWorks fields you want to place them in.

Then, to convert a file of records:

  • Run MARC Transformer
  • Select the map you want to use (if it is not already selected).
  • Click on Select Input File and select the name of the file of saved Libraries Australia records.
  • Click on Select Output File and enter a name for a file to contain the converted records.
  • Click on Transform and wait for the Transformer to finish.
  1. Converting HTML records

Two steps are required for this procedure:

  1. Save the HTML file as text only
  2. Convert the text records using DATA Magician. When you use Data Magician for the first time you will need to create settings, similar to the map in MARC Transformer, to place the correct MARC data into your TextWorks fields.

A. Save as Text

  • Either double click on the file name in Windows Explorer or run your browser and use File>Open to select the file.
  • Choose File>Save As… and select Text File as the file format.

B. Convert the data

  • Run Data Magician and load the settings file you have created.
  • Enter the name of the Text File as the Input file name.
  • Enter an Output file name
  • Run the data conversion.
  1. Load records into TextWorks

Complete the procedure by Importing the transformed/converted records into your TextWorks catalogue.
