RFID

Barcoding technology has been used by many Inmagic libraries to streamline processing of loans. The ease and efficiency of being able to scan in a barcode, over having to browse for the correct entry or type in identifying codes or numbers is well known. The equipment is simple and readily available at low cost.

Now we can begin to employ 21st century technology in the form of RFID tags and readers to deliver even more functionality. Many of you will be aware of “self service” kiosks in Public Libraries, where you can check out a stack of books simply by placing them in a pile on the check out desk. To make this happen the books, or other items, have an RF (Radio Frequency) tag applied in the form of a paper label that contains a tiny circuit board and can also have a barcode that corresponds to the tag’s ID number printed on it.

The check out desk contains a radio aerial that can detect the ID numbers of the items placed on it – these are then communicated to the Library loans database and the items marked as out on loan. The same technology can be used in hand held scanners that enable stocktaking to be performed without handling each individual item, or to activate security gates if items that have not been checked out through the system are carried through them.

Until now RFID technology has been the preserve of larger libraries, as Inmagic software did not provide the interface protocol required for its use. Maxus and our barcode technology partner, ASP Microcomputers, have worked together to develop a programmable interface which will allow any Inmagic textbase to communicate with RFID tagged items, enabling self-check library loans, stocktakes, etc.

Stephen Due, Chief Librarian at Barwon Health Library has installed an RFID Self Check and Security system in conjunction with his Inmagic DB/Text Works library system. Supplied by Maxus in conjunction with  ASP Microcomputers, the new system is relieving staff of repetitive checking in and out of library items, and allowing users to borrow and return books 24/7.
