The ALLA (Australian Law Librarians Association) meeting in Melbourne on February 25 reviewed key social media tools available and how these can be used to enhance existing communications tools, build the brand and create alternative distribution channels for information. As a leading provider of social media knowledge management technology (Presto), Inmagic is extensively using the tools discussed. Check out their presence at:

ARRB Group Ltd, users of Inmagic software for more than 15 years for land transport-related databases, has been commissioned by the Co-operative Research Centre for Rail Innovation http://www.railcrc.net.au/ to develop an online resource for the rail research sector. Inmagic Presto will be used to make a wide range of information available to the CRC's stakeholders and participants. The implementation is housed on one of Maxus’ outsourced web host systems.

True to past form, the VALA biennial conference offered an interesting and varied programme and a trade exhibition that enabled delegates and visitors to extend their knowledge of the information and Knowledge Management marketplace. (Hasn’t “Library Automation”, the “LA” in VALA’s name, come a long way!)
The new venue at the recently opened Melbourne Convention Centre provided excellent facilities (and a certain amount of exercise due to the location and number of the break-out rooms). On our stand we heard good feedback from delegates attending sessions and were pleased to meet many current Inmagic users as well some potential new ones. Inmagic Genie 3.3 and Presto, now at 3.3, excited a lot of interest. If you would like to know more just get in touch with Maxus or your local representative to set up a demonstration time.

Melbourne Inmagic User Group |
The Melbourne Athenaeum Library (established in 1839) hosted the most recent UG meeting on Feb 8th. 30 Inmagic users were treated to an interesting presentation by Librarian, Jill Bartholomeusz, giving us some background to the Library’s history and collections. This included a viewing of the original “Catalogue”, a printed book dating back to the Library’s collection in the 1860's, handled with care and white gloves by Jill. This was followed by an update on the use of Maxus Library and Web Publisher PRO, which has streamlined Library operations, presented by Peter Hyunh, Alison Belcher, Katia Punaro and Peter Congedo. As always at "The Ath”, the hospitality and catering were both excellent! Many thanks to Jill and her crew for making us so welcome.
The Melbourne Athenaeum celebrated its 170th birthday in 2009.
Next UG Meeting
Mark your diaries for 20 April for the next meeting of the Melbourne Inmagic User Group.

Maxus Genie User Interface |
|
|
Managing a library via web based Inmagic Genie provides an ideal solution for many libraries that have a need to provide a web based service to their users and also allow Library Staff to participate in Library Management functions from different locations within their organisation.
Genie’s end user interface is based on the Genie query screens which are attractive and easy to use and also customisable to each Library’s requirements. However, Maxus has identified some user oriented functions not yet addressed by Genie itself, and can provide a “front end” to Genie that expands the range that you can offer to Library Users. The snapshot shows an example of what we can offer.
Please contact Maxus or your local representative for more information.

Hints and Tips
Using a Substitution List in Genie |
In Text Works, certain textbase fields may have a substitution list defined in the textbase structure. If a field uses a * substitution list, you can type the substitution code when adding or editing a record. When you press the Tab key to move away from the entry, the substitution is made automatically. For example, if a field uses the following substitution list, and you type ‘ can’ and then press Tab to move to the next field, the word ‘ Canada’ appears.
If you have frequently used long terms that you require to be entered consistently, it is also possible to use substitution lists in Inmagic Library Suite (Genie). For example, you can set up substitution such as ‘dfc: Australian Department of Families and Communities’. However, unlike Text Works, you need to know the substitution codes as you are unable to browse the Substitution list from the web interface. When the record is saved and then retrieved, the substitution term appears, replacing the substitution code.
- aus:Australia
- can:Canada
- mex:Mexico
- usa:United States of America
To create a substitution list in Text Works, go to Maintain>Edit Textbase Structure and choose Use Substitution List from Text Options tab. You can edit an existing list by choosing Maintain>Edit Lists>Substitution Lists.
* Substitution list: List of abbreviations and expanded terms that can be associated with a field in a textbase. The format of an entry in the list is abbreviation-colon-expansion (for example, MA:Massachusetts). If the abbreviation is typed during data entry or encountered in a record being imported, the expanded term is substituted in the record.
