Changes at Maxus

Change is inevitable and can be stimulating and positive. However, some changes are a bit harder to view in a positive light than others! So it is with regret that I have to pass on the news of this change: Andrew Pentecost has accepted a new appointment as “Electronic Services Executive” with a library supplier in Sydney. He will leave us on 23 November.

As you will know, Maxus has valued Andrew’s contributions over the last five and a half years very highly and he will be very hard to replace. I know (because many of you have told me) that Andrew’s work with you has been professionally and technically excellent, and delivered in a manner always appropriate and easy to understand. He will be missed by us all.

I’m sure you will want to join me in wishing him every success in his new role, and in making a new life in Sydney. I know that he will approach these challenges in his usual calm and systematic manner and that his future colleagues will very quickly appreciate his skills. Feel free to make contact with Andrew yourselves to wish him well (and throw in any of those “quick questions” while you have the chance!) His email address until 23 November is andrew.pentecost@maxus.net.au.

— Norma Tovey, Managing Director, Maxus Australia

DB/Text version 11 – coming soon!

This month we are able to pre-announce the release of DB/TextWorks and DB/Text WebPublisher PRO Version 11. As with all new version releases, DB/TextWorks and DB/Text WebPublisher PRO customers on maintenance automatically receive Version 11 as part of their annual maintenance contract, and thus can take advantage of these enhanced features and functionality at no additional cost.

We know you will be very pleased to learn about the improved functionality that Version 11 is going to enable! The new features include:

  • DB/TextWorks:
    • Vista compatibility
    • File checker (similar to the existing link checker, but it will verify UNC referenced network files as well as URLs)
    • An undo action command for specific action types in the form designer
    • HTML report preview: from within the form designer, this feature shows what a report will look like when displayed in the web environment using WebPublisher PRO
    • Ability to select the form used in the Edit Secondary Record window
  • DB/Text WebPublisher PRO
    • Windows Server 2008 compatibility
    • XHTML compliance
    • Query logging to provide the administrator with a log of WebPublisher PRO queries
    • Next/Previous Highlight navigation

If you are planning to use Vista on your desktop or your IT department is planning to move to Windows Server 2008 (Microsoft has scheduled the release of Windows Server 2008 for February), Version 11 is a must, as prior versions of DB/Text WebPublisher PRO are not compatible with Windows Server 2008.

Don't forget to renew your Maintenance agreement in 2007 to receive any available product upgrades. To renew, please contact Maxus or your local representative.

Federal Court to update electronic discovery rules

ComplianceVaultAustralia has followed the global trend towards using email as a primary collaboration tool. This has led to an explosive volume of email data. Most organisations have a clear understanding of their legal obligations when it comes to hard copy documents, but many are not so certain how to adequately capture electronic records. In the USA, Canada, New Zealand and parts of Europe, the rules for managing email are much more clearly defined.

A progressive, leading approach was undertaken by the state of Victoria earlier this year. The Victorian Practice Note 1 of 2007 provides guidance to parties and lawyers on the use of technology for the preparation and management of civil litigation in the Court.

Now it appears that the Federal Court will address the issue of effective management of electronic data, with its own Practice Note planned for release before Christmas. A number of court cases in recent times have highlighted the need for specific guidelines around compliance, which should reduce the high costs associated with a lengthy and often complex e-discovery.

Data storage on secure WORM technology, plus fast search and retrieval, are major features of ComplianceVault – the email archiving and management appliance with an all-in-one solution.

For more information, read our ComplianceVault web page, or contact Maxus via email or by phone on (03) 9646 1988.

Presentation on Feeds and Mashups

At the recent Health Libraries Inc Conference in Melbourne, Andrew Pentecost of Maxus Australia delivered a live presentation on mashups in the library context. The presentation showed how to use a web-based feed reader like Google Reader to mash up a number of feeds ready for presentation to your library users. We are pleased to be able to include the full text of Andrew's presentation on the Maxus web site, including step by step instructions on how to subscribe to feeds and combine them in a mashup. Here is the link to Feeds and Mashups: A Healthy Diet of Live Content.
