Barcode Readers & Labels

Maxus Australia provides a range of barcode readers, labels and services that can help make your life so much easier. Barcodes eliminate typing errors, improve accuracy and speed up your processing times.

They are perfect for libraries: when used to identify library materials and even borrowers, barcodes make it a breeze to perform all of the out-of-the-box operations that come with our Maxus Library package. Barcodes are not limited to traditional library tasks. Maxus clients also use barcodes and DB/TextWorks to achieve a range of tasks – even keeping track of furniture and other items used in display homes!

All Maxus applications are designed to take advantage of the efficiencies offered by the use of barcodes. For example, you can use barcode labels to identify:
  • Books
  • Audio-visual items
  • Files or documents
  • Physical assets (from desks to laptop computers)
  • Paintings and heritage objects
  • and much more
Using one of the barcode reading devices supplied by Maxus, you can zap these barcode directly into your Maxus application's data entry or search screens, or batch load from a portable device.

ASP Barcode Zapper  – Fast and easy scanning of barcodes

Image of the Zapper The Zapper aggressively grabs any barcode that comes too near! With a wide 80mm mouth, not much can escape and high scanning speed combined with an advanced decoding engine easily reads marginal barcodes. The Zapper's multi-interface design allows connection to a PC, Mac, RS-232 or even wand emulation. Low power consumption makes the Zapper ideal for upgrading from wands on portable readers.

A Zapper Junior is also available – it has a PC-only interface, and 60mm scan width, but the same Zapper quality. All Zappers also have "Flexible Reading Zone" optics which allow more flexibility in location of the Zapper relative to the barcode.

ASP Zapper StingRay – Stylish, ergonomic and functional

The ASP Zapper StingRay is as stylish as it is functional. This distance reading, Linear Imager Barcode Scanner has a read range of around 20 cm, making it an ideal match for its optional Hands Free Stand. The stand itself can be horizontally or vertically mounted, with a flexible arm that allows it to be positioned where you need it.

The StingRay has already won two Design Awards, which shows not only in its sleek appearance, but also in its balance in the hand. Weighing only 130 grams, and having a symmetrical trigger, allows for both left and right handed use.

The StingRay scans quickly and aggressively, and incorporates all the major interfaces such as RS232, PS2/Keyboard and USB. Changing the interface just requires purchase of the right user installable cable and scanning a few barcodes.

ASP Zapper LongReach – Laser-like distance barcode scanning!

The ASP Zapper LongReach looks like a laser gun, scans like a laser gun, but it's priced at an affordable level because it uses solid state Linear Imager technology.

You can read barcodes from up to 200 mm away, and the bright focused reading beam makes aiming simple. The LongReach is pictured to the right without a cable fitted; its optional "Hands Free" Stand is shown in the inset.

Like the Barcode Zapper, the LongReach has all its interfaces built in as standard - PC Keyboard Emulation, Notebook, MAC, RS232, RS232 Wedge and Wand Emulation. Just get the right adaptor cable assembly, click it onto the end of the cable, and scan a few barcodes from the manual to configure your LongReach.

Z4 DataTraq  – Portable reader for added flexibility

The Z4 DataTraq Portable Barcode Reader – a battery operated portable barcode reader with keypad, LCD display, 32K RAM, security RAM backup, programmed for use with Maxus Library's circulation system. This flexible little machine may also be run as simple barcode reader. The portable nature of the Z4 DataTraq makes it ideal for library stocktakes: you carry it around the stacks with you, scanning in your collection's barcodes, then use its easy LCD interface to download the capture information into your DB/TextWorks database. (You might also like to click here to read our tip page on carrying out a stocktake using your portable reader!)

The Z4 DataTraq is also ideal for libraries that cannot process loans straight into a "live" version of their loans database; the portable reader can be located on the loans desk and the loans transactions that it records can be downloaded to the loans database on a regular basis. Some programming is needed to enable the reader to function this way; Maxus can do this programming for you.

ASP MiniTraq – Affordable portable reader

Imagine a non-contact Portable Barcode Reader that was low cost, and fitted in the palm of your hand...

The ASP MiniTraq incorporates a 100 scan per second CCD scan engine that makes marginal barcodes of practically any symbology read as though they were perfect. It stores them into non-volatile memory so that there is no risk of losing your important data, even if the batteries are removed.

And with nearly 30,000 characters of data storage, you can fit in a lot of barcodes!

ASP MiniTraq

To download, just plug in the cable and hold the scan button in for a few seconds, and your data is transferred quickly via an RS-232 port using the provided download utility.

When not scanning, the MiniTraq automatically reduces battery consumption, or you can turn it off altogether with its power switch, allowing very long battery life with 2 AAA alkaline batteries.

For all kinds of applications, the MiniTraq is hard to beat.

Label+ Barcode Printing Software

The Label+ software is a Windows application that makes it easy to print barcode labels with added text to your own specifications. You can use Label+ to set up barcodes with your choice of font, size and positioning on a wide range of label sheets. Label+ lets you include your own text (for instance, the name of your organisation or your department). Click here to download an evaluation version of Label+.

Barcode Labels

We can supply you with a variety of sheets of blank barcode labels in both paper and polycoated form. You can then use the report writing facility in DB/TextWorks to design and print your own labels from your DB/TextWorks databases, or you can use the Label+ software to generate your own labels.

Preprinted Barcode Labels

Maxus can supply preprinted barcode labels according to your specifications in a range of sizes. Fixed or variable text can be printed above and below the actual barcode. You can specify a range of numbers to be printed, plus a fixed prefix or suffix, or you can supply an ASCII file of data to be printed on each label. (Contact Maxus for details of how to prepare this file from your DB/TextWorks database.)

During the printing process a plastic coating is fused onto the printed barcodes. These labels are expected to withstand approximately 1,000 scans before becoming unreadable. The labels are also moisture resistant though not waterproof.

Labels are available in the following sizes:

Number per sheet

Size of label in mm

44

48 x 25

64

50 x 17

90

40 x 15
